As far as I can tell, the national debt went past the knee of the exponential sometime between about March and October 2008 - before Obama was elected.  But a characteristic of all exponentials is that they do not rocket up immediately after passing the knee - there is a time after they pass the knee when they continue to go up slowly, albeit ever-more-quickly over the course of time.  The national debt exponential is so huge that that time lasted from later in 2008 until about December 1, 2009 - more than 12 months.

But the national debt did start rocketing up in December 2009 - it went up $1 trillion from Dec. 1, 2009 to about June 1, 2010 and another $1 trillion from about June 1, 2010 to about Jan. 1, 2011 - in other words, $2 trillion in about 13 months.

The overall message here is that the reason why the national debt started rocketing up during Obama's presidency is not because Obama is responsible for it, but because of the dynamics of how an exponential works.  George W. Bush was actually responsible for putting us past the knee of the exponential, with America having been on that path for a long time already with presidents from both parties being responsible for helping us along in getting to that point.
